Students attended a Skype session with Ms. Josephine in England (United Kingdom). They discussed about different kinds of houses found there. Later they wrote their reflection in their process journals using a concept map. A map marking activity allowed students to mark different kinds of homes found around the world. They also researched about different homes and materials used to build them as an integration activity with ICT.

Math

Students practiced carry over addition sums by creating their own word problems through an activity. They were introduced to the concept of rounding off of numbers through a video presentation. Prior knowledge assessment of measurement was taken while the Formative assessment on probability completed their learning this fortnight.

Students were introduced to the use of a dictionary with a  pairing activity where they were given some unit related words and were asked to find the meanings. Students engaged in a spell bee through a word meaning activity. Further to enhance their understanding about the concept of verbs, students read an online story- more or less, need to guess thereby understanding the concept of estimation (math).

Hindi

During their Hindi lessons, students read the story ‘Rohan kaa ghar’. They found ‘sanyuktaakshar’ and made a list from the story. They picked up new vocabulary from the story and were able to form simple and meaningful sentences. They participated in the activity ‘Bas Ek Pal’ and expressed their thoughts on the unit related topics.    

Ab initio

Students were introduced to maatras where they practiced writing simple words. They also watched stories and illustrated their understanding in their process journals.

Physical Education

Introduction of stance, balance and dribbling of the basketball was undertaken.

Stance-feet apart, flex the legs on the knees, maintain  upper body in an upright position, with head facing in front and parallel to the ground, and flex their arms on their sides. 

Dribbling- Hold the ball in both hands. Fingertips should be spread on each side of the ball to prevent it from slipping off the hands.

Music

Students sang ‘Heal the world’ individually and  as a group on the microphone where each student was assessed on their singing. Students also had an session with the piano and  learned the names of the keys  to distinguish between natural, sharp and flat notes.

Dance

Students stressed on observation and analysis skills when they were given a task of creating an impromptu symmetrical movement.

 

ICT

Students were taught  to create stories on ‘Homes’ unit using photo story. They have learned  to insert pictures, text and audio into the story. They have started adding pictures in  apps to create stories.

UOI

 

Students displayed their prior knowledge using a Think- Wink- Decide strategy where they elaborated upon their understanding about the unit on “Homes” and put forth numerous questions related to the unit that they’d like to explore. Moreover, students elicited their understanding through an engaging group activity in which they made a picture collage differentiating between needs and wants, and wrote their learning about the same on a T-chart.

Furthermore, they illustrated the house they reside in and discussed different types of houses.

English

 

During language acquisition lessons, students watched an audio-visual story of the ‘Three Little Pigs,’ as a part of integration with Unit of Inquiry related to homes. They also exhibited their presentation and communication skills while enacting the story using dialogues.

Students attempted spell bee crossword puzzle to enhance their vocabulary development. Furthermore, students were given a listening activity in which they got to listen to the audio story of “Peggy’s talking Pets”. They used listening skills development strategies that were followed by a questions based task.

During lessons, students were led into the concept of verbs through prior knowledge assessment for which they wrote their daily chores and tried to identify action words in the written sentences. Students were next shown a picture and were asked to frame sentences to describe the actions demonstrated in the picture. Later, they watched another audio-visual on verbs to promote a pronunciation drill that exposed them to a variety of verbs.

Recapitulation of homophones was undertaken with a poem ‘I’m all mixed up’ and sentences were framed with homophones in the process journal.

Math

 

Students gained knowledge about probability by participating in a vocabulary based engagement. They were shown a scenario based audio-visual on probability for clarity. In addition to this, they attempted an interesting task sheet on probability.

They practiced 3 digit addition sums in their process journals. Furthermore, they applied their understanding of the concept to problem sums by using the  RUCSAC strategy.

Hindi

 

During their Hindi lessons, students attempted a visual imagery activity. They watched the picture and enhanced their verbal skills by retelling the story. The students honed their creative writing skills by weaving their thoughts into characterization of the main character of the story using graphic organizers. They were introduced to the grammar concepts like ‘sanyukat vyanjan’( क्ष, त्र  ज्ञ, श्र) through the story of ‘vichitraa baannsuree waala’. They found words like  कक्षा,पत्र (kaksha,patra) etc and framed sentences using the same.

ICT

 

Students were divided into groups according to the country of their choice and researched on the types of homes peculiar to that particular country. They have begun learning to save pictures in the folder created in their name on the desktop. They are developing their research skills and collecting unit related pictures to soon create a story on homes.

Art

 

In the past two weeks, the students of Grade 2 continued exploring the cubist style of art. They were encouraged to draw and discuss various elements and techniques of cubism. Students have demonstrated their drawing skills through a final art composition inspired by the same style.

Dance

 

Students stressed on cleaning up posture in dance routine, starting from head to toe. Apart from that, students have been practicing and adding steps to their jazz dance routine.

Music

 

The students learned how to sing ‘Heal the World’. They were also assessed on their singing for which each student came up and sang individually on the microphone.

Physical Education

 

Students were introduced to the concept of stance, balance and basketball dribbling. Stance has been taught with a technique of feet apart, flexing the legs on the knees, maintaining the upper body in an upright position with head facing the front and parallel to the ground, flexing the arms on the sides simultaneously.

Furthermore, Balance has been inculcated to enable them to maintain the body balance.

Dribbling has been taught with a technique of holding the ball in both hands and fingertips to be spread on each side of the ball to prevent it from slipping off the hands.

Library

 

Grade 2 visited the library and exchanged books from last week with one Hindi and one English selection. In addition they were introduced to magazines like Magic Pot and Primary Plus. Each one was given two magazines to browse and read. After browsing the difference between a magazine and a regular book was discussed and the frequency of publication of these magazines, the activities enlisted in their pages were highlighted.

To further enhance the understanding of communicating ideas and feelings, the students were shown TV commercials and print advertisements that created awareness about pollution. Students attempted formative assessment and a summative task on their Unit of Inquiry.

Students were tuned into the new Unit of Inquiry ‘Homes’ through a visual presentation . The focus  on homeless people allowed them to explore the basic needs of human beings. The students understood the difference between a need and a want.

During their English classes, students were shown an audio visual of words with phonogram sounds –‘tion’, ‘ture’ and ‘unk’. They identified words and their meanings with the phonogram sounds and together with the facilitator constructed sentences in their process journals.

Students read an online reading story without pictures and visualized as well as illustrated events in a graphic organizer. They were assessed on their spellings through a spell bee where they also chose 2-3 words from the list to make sentences.

Math

Prior knowledge assessment on addition was undertaken where students demonstrated different ways to add numbers.  Practice of addition allowed  students to create a number line  and solve 2 digit addition sums in their process journals, using the line.

Students used place value counters to understand the commutative property of addition.

Hindi

During their Hindi classes, students enhanced their speaking skills through tongue twisters, songs, poem and  stories . They also practiced writing sentences ‘धन्यवाद संदेश’ (Thank you message) for their parents. They celebrated Hindi Diwas with  passion and enthusiasm. The key message was ‘नर हो, न निराश करो मन को’(Nar ho, na niraash karo man ko) which inspired the students to always be optimistic in life.

ICT

Students explored audio tools in MS-OneNote and recorded their reflection on communication and OneNote, using those tools. They were introduced to AI (Artificial Intelligence) through a video and briefed on how it is helping to change  lives. They explored an online tool based on AI, where whatever they drew automatically got converted into a beautiful illustration.

Art

For this period, students  have explored the artworks of Spanish painter Pablo Picasso. They were introduced to  Cubism and the use of geometrical shapes, multi-perspectives and colour to communicate different messages and feelings. The students concentrated on a couple of Picasso works and after preliminary drawings, they executed an original composition applying the cubist style and techniques.

Dance

Students stressed basic full body workout, starting from head to toe. Apart from that, they have been practicing and adding steps to jazz dance routine.

Music

The students watched a presentation on how musicians have communicated their ideas and feelings through music. They were also introduced to Michael Jackson’s ‘Heal the World’ and sang it in class.

Library

Grade 2 visited library to exchange their books.This week they issued books from picture books and oxford reading categories.

Students were asked to share  stories from the books they had taken in the last week.

Physical Education

Students practiced skating like sit and stand up, march forward, forward two-foot glide, bonus skill: two-foot hop in place and two-foot turns from forward to backward in place — clockwise and counterclockwise.

This fortnight, students continued to gain knowledge about the current unit of communication.The highlight was an audio visual on the evolution of communication. They explored how communication systems have changed from past to the present. Later, students reflected by creating a timeline on the evolution of books in their process journals.

As  part of an assessment ,students  did a task sheet, where they had to elucidate  advantages and disadvantages of various communication systems.

Students went for a gallery walk to observe different paintings in  school. Later, they discussed their perspectives about the paintings during classtime.

Students attended a guest speaker session to reiterate their understanding of different ways to communicate their feelings and ideas.

English

During their English classes, students attempted to identify appropriate punctuation marks for sentences and practiced punctuation in their process journals. Students enhanced their understanding of words with phonogram sounds – ‘ck’, ‘ick’ and ‘ack’. They attempted a task sheet on phonograms where they identified the picture and wrote the words on a flower foldable.

Students read a poem on emotions and shared their perspective on the poem through illustrations. They were assessed on their spellings through a spelling bee where they also chose 2-3 words from the list to make sentences.

Students attempted formative assessment on punctuation where they used appropriate punctuation marks at the end of each sentence.

Numeracy

During their Math classes, students further expanded their understanding of odd/even numbers through online games and they practiced solving related problems in their journals. They also represented the numbers on an abacus with colour coding.Later they revisited the concept of place value through a dice activity.Students attempted a summative assessment on the number system through a task sheet.

Hindi

During their Hindi lessons, students discussed  ‘संचार के प्राचीन और आधुनिक साधन’ (Communication systems used in the past and present) and watched a video on it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ay2Qy3wBe8). They watched the story  ‘विचित्र बांसुरीवाला’

During the music classes the students discussed how to communicate their ideas and feelings effectively through instruments. They also wrote songs about how they feel and shared these songs with their classmates.

During the ICT classes student-made beautiful posters using Pic Collage on communication. They continued with their work on MS-OneNote and further explored drawing tools. They made freehand illustrations to hone their creative skills.

Dance

During dance classes students explored  jazz walk preparations with feet positions which corresponded to style and technique. Further they concentrated on spotting and demonstration of different techniques used during the dance routine. Students participated in a jazz choreography dance routine too.

Art

 

Students inquired about cubism. They also discussed about the cubic artist Pablo Picasso and observed some artwork done by him and other artists on the style.

Library

With the belief that there is nothing as powerful as education, the world celebrates Literacy Day every year on September 8.  Students were made aware about the importance of literacy to individuals, society, and communities  to know their social and individual rights. Literacy is required for social and personal development.

Physical Education

 

 

Students tuned into sport signals and signs which are used on the field. Further, students explored signal indication with flags and hand gestures.

To further enhance the understanding of the unit, the students were shown various travel blogs and hotel reviews. They learnt about various distress signals used in the air, water and land. Students were shown invitation cards (tangible paper-cards and virtual e-cards in order to observe and understand the evolution of invitation cards) and a few audio visuals to observe and understand the evaluation of communication from past to present.

Literacy

The students learnt about the parts of the story (beginning, middle and end) by reading books and audio visuals. This understanding was further enhanced by sequencing of the story in the journal. They also watched a short film on communication through action which was followed by class discussion and reflection in journal.

Students were assessed on their spellings through a spell bee. They read ORT books of their age level and were assessed through a rubric.

Prior knowledge assessment was done on punctuation where groups of students were given sentence cards that had to be punctuated. The groups exchanged these cards and discussed whether the sentences were correctly punctuated or not.

Numeracy

Students gained knowledge about why arranging numbers in order is important in life. They practiced odd and even numbers through a task sheet and manipulation. They also learnt about the place value and face value of a number.

Music

The students learnt how to sing ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with dynamics. They also did some vocal exercises to enhance the quality of their voice and learnt how to sing major scales.

ICT

Students were introduced to research and its types. Later they were divided into two teams and were given examples to identify the type of research. They also learned about various browsers and the type of search engines associated with them. They were briefed on the keywords that they could use for search. They learned how to insert copy and paste images into One Note.

 

Dance

Students did basic warm up and stretching exercises to get flexibility in their movements. They practiced hand and feet positions with regular dance routines. They made connection between upper and lower body parts.

Art

While connecting to the central idea,” People can use a variety of ways to communicate their ideas and feelings”, students are exploring how an artist communicates ideas, feelings and concepts through art making. Students discussed the influence of colour and created an artwork using the colours of their choice. They also observed and analysed Pablo Picasso’s artwork belonging to different periods based on colours and emotions.

Hindi

During their Hindi lessons, students revisited all ‘maatraas’. They enhanced their verbal skills through reciting a poem ‘हुए बहुत दिन’ (hue bahut din). They picked up new vocabulary from the poem and were able to form simple and meaningful sentences.  They were introduced to the grammar concepts like  संज्ञा (naming words) and विशेषण (adjective) through an activity called ‘Think, Pair and share’.

Being in sync with the grade 2 UOI topic ‘communications’ students  read and discussed a non-fiction book called ‘using a computer’ which provided us information on how computers help people to use and exchange information. The book also imparted knowledge about the history of computers and how to use them for their personal benefits.

P.E

Students did body awareness exercises to increase their balance. They did alternate toe touching , touching  the ground without bending knees, clasping of  hand behind the  neck , putting hands on the hips and crossing arms in front of  the chest.

This fortnight, students embarked on a new Unit of Inquiry- ‘People can use a variety of ways to communicate their ideas and feelings.’

As a part of prior knowledge assessment, the students did a group activity, where they had to say ‘hello’ in three different languages.They explained the central idea of the of the unit at length by making a mind map and highlighting key words.

Students further tuned into verbal communication through a game called ‘telephone’. They passed on a message from one to the other.Further, they  inquired through an activity called ‘charades’ in order to learn about non-verbal communication,where they exchanged messages through their body language, facial expressions and signs.

Students further inquired different tools of communication and wrote their understanding in their process journals. They sorted out different forms of verbal and non-verbal communication through a newspaper activity. They also learned about Braille language through a video and observed their surroundings to understand Braille better.

LANGUAGE

 

During their English classes, students prior knowledge was assessed through ‘Think-pair-share’ activity on Nouns. They listened to a story and identified nouns.

Students were introduced to phonograms through a group activity that used jumbled sentences.They identified ‘oo’, ‘ee’ and ‘ow’ words and wrote the words with these phonograms in their process journals.

Students further tuned into the concept of common and proper noun and wrote their understanding with appropriate examples.

NUMERACY

 

During their Maths classes, students approached the concept of place value through various manipulatives (golden beads, number cards, color coded sticks). They explored the topic by giving a number of their partners and arranging the beads and sticks at the right place value.

Their understanding of number names and the expanded form of numbers was further honed. Students wrote their understanding in their process journals.

HINDI

 

During their Hindi lessons, students discussed and formulated essential agreements .They watched the story ‘Chatur Geedad’( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycZT3bn2QII ) and identified different learner profiles and attributes from the same. Students also revised swar and vyanjans through ‘shabd seedhee’ and revised all matraa.

In the Ab-in two  classes,students enhanced their vocabulary skills by speaking about themselves. They learned  names of  colours and revisited different letters through engaging activities.

ICT

 

Students were welcomed into their ICT class. They formalized  essential agreements that would be followed throughout the year. The introductory class aimed to make them comfortable with their surroundings and apprised students about the use of iPad and laptop devices Input-output and all the other physical components of the computer were recapitulated through an online quiz. Mouse clicks with the help of an online program was practiced.They were further tuned into 21st-century skills where students illustrated their understanding of different types of social media.

MUSIC

 

In their music class the students sang ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (https://youtu.be/uQ0ODCMC6xs) and ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ (https://youtu.be/jDn2bn7_YSM).They also learned how to sing the Indian National Anthem.

DANCE

 

Students learned about basics of jazz and walk with proper body postures. They also learned about different dance movements to make their core muscles strong.

During library lessons, birthday of one of the bestselling fiction authors of all time ‘Enid Blyton’who, according to UNESCO is the most translated children’s authors in the world having sold more than 600 million books; was celebrated.

The children were given a brief introduction about the author and the popular series written by her – Noddy, Famous Five, The secret seven, Amelia Jane, Malory Towers and The faraway tree.

Children were also assessed for number of books they had read during the summer vacation.

P.E

 

Children practiced leg exercises for strength and agility like standing up and sitting down,stepping up and down,knee bends and standing on toes.They further practiced basketball like stance, dribbling and grip.

ART

The students were introduced to basic drawing and colour theory. They applied it in creating map and flag of India.They further explored expressions and emotions through emojis.
